Galerie Art presents Revisitations, Thandi Mokoena’s first solo presentation in Paris since relocating to Lisbon. The exhibition gathers a new body of carved and cast works made in the period following the passing of the artist’s father, and takes its title from the dual sense of revisiting and visitation — a return to forms, places and memories that continue to surface.
Working in burnt timber, bronze and marble, Mokoena hollows her columns until they stand at the edge of collapse. Works such as Standing Figure I and Hollow Form dwell on the threshold between presence and absence, while the three columns at the centre of the gallery read as a family held in tension.
The sculptures resist a single reading. Material becomes a site of inheritance, where the personal and the historical are layered until they are no longer distinct.

Thandi Mokoena’s sculpture explores memory, inheritance and the residue of colonial histories across the Indian Ocean. Her work has recently been presented in major institutional contexts, and she lives and works between Paris and Lisbon.
